P-51C Mustang North American Reconstruction
ROCAF – Texas – 1948
The P-51C Mustang is one of the early versions of the legendary Mustang, before the bubble canopy D/K version. It was built by North American Aviation in Inglewood and Dallas and was a crucial transitional type between the early Allison-powered Mustangs and the later P-51Ds.
This particular reconstruction concerns an aircraft assigned to the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) in the late 1940s.
P-51C Technical Characteristics
Unlike the P-51D/K:
It retained a “razorback” back (without a full bubble canopy)
Armament: 4 × .50 cal Browning (not 6 as in the D)
Engine: Packard-built Merlin V-1650-7
High performance at high altitude
Excellent endurance
The P-51C was essentially the American version of the British Mustang Mk III.
Post-war Transfer to China
After World War II, surplus Mustangs were given to US allies. As part of military aid, several P-51Cs and Ds were transferred to the ROCAF during the period 1946–1948, for use in the Chinese Civil War.
The aircraft operated:
From bases in mainland China
On interception missions
On ground missions against communist forces
When the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan in 1949, as many aircraft as could be transported were saved on the island.
Mustangs on both sides
During the civil war, some Mustangs defected to the opposing side through defections or base capture. Thus, the newly formed People’s Liberation Army Air Force also used a limited number of P-51s in its early stages.
The irony of history? American fighters with Chinese insignia on both sides.
The Texas Rebuild
The rebuild of this particular P-51C was carried out in Texas, restoring:
The original ROCAF markings
The 1947-48 camouflage paint scheme
The standard 4-gun configuration
The original canopy type
The ROCAF configuration choice is historically significant, as it represents the last operational phase of the Mustang in the Chinese mainland before the full transition to jets.
From Piston to Jet
The Mustang era in Asia quickly ended.
With the advent of Soviet types such as the MiG-15, piston fighters became technologically obsolete within a few years.
In Taiwan, the successor was the F-86F Sabre, marking the transition to the Cold War era.
Historical Significance of the P-51C ROCAF
This particular aircraft is not just a Mustang.
It is:
A relic of the Chinese Civil War
A symbol of American postwar military policy
A bridge between WWII and the Cold War
A rare razorback version in Asian operational use
