F-4E Phantom ii, AUP.339 sq aias ph farewell anniversary painting – HAF

A OFFICIAL ceremony was held at Andravida Air Base on October 31, 2017 for the decommissioning of 339 “Aias” (“Ajax”) Mira, one of the two local F-4E AUP Phantom II squadrons belonging to the 117th Fighter Wing of the Hellenic Air Force.

Two F-4E AUP aircraft were presented for the occasion. Serial 01504 was fully armed with air-to-air missiles while serial 71744 was partially painted to mark the decommissioning. It carried different artwork on each side of the tail, highlighting the 65 years of service of the “Aias”. Although 71744 is undergoing a major overhaul, it is expected to return in service with 338 Mira and is likely to retain these 339 Mira markings. Three F-4E AUP aircraft from 339 Mira flew during the ceremony, performing a few sorties.

The departure of the “Nine” also marked the expansion of their sister unit. The personnel and F-4s of 339 Mira merged with 338 “Ares” Mira on 31 October. The unit will have approximately 25 operational Phantoms in its inventory. There are currently no plans to reduce the number of active aircraft in service.

Special marking F-4E AUP serial 71744 at Andravida. While the “Nine” were primarily tasked with the air defense mission, the expanded 338 Mira will primarily conduct airstrike missions.

A big thank you to everyone who worked on the 65th anniversary of the 339th Squadron
