F-16C Viper STAR 60th Anniversary 343 Fighter Squadron Hellenic Air Force – Tamiya 1:48 Build Review
The Hellenic Air Force has produced some of the most recognizable and visually striking F-16 aircraft in Europe, but few special schemes combine symbolism and appearance as successfully as aircraft “505” of 343 Fighter Squadron.
I had the opportunity to study this particular F-16 up close during a visit to its home base at the 115th Fighter Wing in Souda, Crete. Seeing the aircraft in person revealed details and proportions that photographs never fully capture. The special star artwork immediately stood out and from that moment I knew I wanted to recreate it as a scale model.
The tail design was created for the 60th anniversary of 343 Fighter Squadron and officially appeared during the anniversary celebration held on Friday, July 24, 2015, at Souda Air Base in the presence of the Chief of Tactical Air Force, Lieutenant General (I) Christos Christodoulou.
Aircraft “505” became the third F-16 Viper carrying this commemorative appearance and, for me, the most attractive choice for a future Greek Viper project.
The project started with the excellent Tamiya 1:48 F-16C Fighting Falcon Block 25/32 kit (#61101).
Even though the kit represents an earlier F-16 configuration, externally it offers an excellent base for conversion into modern Hellenic Air Force versions, including Block 52+ and later Viper configurations.
Tamiya provides a highly detailed package including the correct Pratt & Whitney configuration with the smaller intake, revised exhaust nozzle, accurate landing gear parts, multiple weapons options, fuel tanks and targeting equipment.
To further improve realism, several aftermarket accessories can transform the model into a much more accurate Greek aircraft.
For the tail section and conformal fuel tank configuration, I recommend the AWC-MODEL conversion set together with the GrandModels CFT package. Additional engine detail can be added using the Eduard Brassin F-16CJ Block 52 engine set. For markings, dedicated Hellenic Air Force decal sets are now available, making reproduction of special schemes significantly easier than before.
For this build, I decided not to display the aircraft parked.
Instead, I wanted to capture the aggressive appearance of the Viper in flight.
To achieve this effect, I mounted the model using reinforced wire routed through the centerline fuel tank and secured internally with polyester adhesive. This method allowed the aircraft to appear airborne while keeping the support almost invisible.
Painting followed the familiar Hellenic Air Force Aegean Ghost camouflage pattern.
The combination of subtle grey-blue tones gives Greek F-16s a unique identity and creates an impressive finish in scale form. I used Mr Paint colors combined with the dedicated HAVE Glass Special Matt Varnish to reproduce the distinctive operational appearance of modern HAF Vipers.
Hellenic Air Force F-16 Aegean Ghost Camouflage – Paint Reference Table
| Area | FS Code | Color |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Camouflage | FS 35237 | Aegean Ghost Blue Grey |
| Upper Mid Tone | FS 36251 | Aegean Ghost Grey |
| Blue Accent Areas | FS 35164 | Aegean Blue |
| Lower Surfaces | FS 36375 | Aegean Delta Grey |
| Radome / Panels | FS 36270 | Medium Grey |
| Additional Soft Contrast | FS 36307 | Light Grey |
Weathering remained relatively restrained.
The goal was to reproduce an operational aircraft rather than an excessively worn appearance.
For exhaust effects and fluid staining I used AK Interactive weathering products focused on jet exhaust and kerosene residue.
The most difficult stage of the entire project was reproducing the anniversary star on the vertical stabilizer.
At the time of construction, dedicated decals did not yet exist, so the marking had to be created manually. Careful hand application was necessary to achieve the correct geometry and preserve the appearance of the original aircraft.
Despite the additional work involved, the result justified the effort.
This project ultimately became more than simply another F-16 build.
F-16C Block 50 Fighting Falcon 1/48 Tamiya – Greek Air Force 347 Squadron Build Review
It became a tribute to one of the most distinctive commemorative aircraft ever operated by the Hellenic Air Force and a reminder that sometimes the most memorable projects begin with seeing the real aircraft up close.
A model built to represent speed, presence and one special moment in the history of 343 Fighter Squadron.
