F-16C Block 50 Fighting Falcon 1/48 – Hellenic Air Force 347 Squadron “Perseus” (055) | Detailed Build Review
Building a modern Greek fighter is always a rewarding project, especially when the subject is the iconic F-16C Block 50 Fighting Falcon of 347 Squadron “Perseus” from 111 Combat Wing, Nea Anchialos Air Base.
For this project, the base kit selected was the excellent Tamiya 1/48 release. Widely considered one of the finest F-16 kits available in this scale, it offers outstanding fit, sharp surface detail and a very enjoyable overall building experience.
The only real drawback of the kit is that it does not fully represent a Greek F-16C Block 50 directly from the box. To achieve an accurate Hellenic Air Force configuration, two visible modifications were required.
The first modification was the addition of the characteristic drag parachute housing extension at the base of the vertical stabilizer. This can be sourced from another kit such as Kinetic or replaced with an aftermarket resin conversion.
The second modification involved adding the formation lights located on both sides of the air intake. These were scratch-built using thin plastic sheet and integrated into the fuselage for a more authentic Greek appearance.
For this build, multiple aftermarket improvements were installed to push detail to a higher level.
A metal pitot tube from Master was added to improve the radar cone appearance, together with resin AOA sensors. The cockpit, engine nozzle and wheel bays were upgraded using high-quality sets from Aires.
Additional refinement came from several enhancement sets by Eduard, including exterior detailing, interior improvements and a complete weapons package. Upgraded landing gear wheels and detailed air brakes completed the configuration and delivered the level of realism desired for this project.
Although the build included a considerable amount of resin work, assembly progressed smoothly overall.
The most challenging area remained the well-known nose section fit around the radar cone, where additional adjustment and blending were required to achieve a seamless transition with the lower fuselage.
Extra attention was also given to the intake trunking. The interior seams were eliminated using repeated filling and surface preparation techniques to create a continuous intake appearance.
Painting was completed using the Mr Paint (MRP) range in the classic Ghost Scheme colors used by the Hellenic Air Force.
These paints proved exceptional throughout the project, delivering extremely smooth coverage directly from the bottle without requiring additional thinning.
To recreate the operational wear typical of Greek Block 50 aircraft, several tonal variations were applied.
Three to four lighter mixes blended with white were sprayed across the upper surfaces to reproduce sun fading and operational exposure. Additional darker shades mixed with black were selectively applied to create depth and variation.
Weathering continued mainly on the lower surfaces using oil paints to reproduce realistic service staining and accumulated operational wear. Final effects were further blended after decal application.
Markings were applied using the excellent decals from Two Bobs, which performed perfectly and captured the aircraft’s identity accurately.
The engine nozzle received a multilayer metallic finish using Alclad shades including Aluminium, Steel, Titanium, Pale Burnt Metal and Exhaust Manifold, producing realistic thermal discoloration and metallic depth.
For the final finish, the model was sealed with Mr Paint (MRP) Semi-Matt Varnish, bringing all tones and weathering effects together into a realistic operational appearance.
The final result is a highly detailed representation of a Hellenic Air Force F-16C Block 50 Fighting Falcon from 347 Squadron “Perseus”, combining accuracy, extensive detailing and convincing operational weathering.
