F-102 Delta Dagger: Hellenic Air Force 1/72 Scale Model Build

The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger is an iconic American interceptor distinguished by its distinctive delta-wing configuration and its role in the development of Cold War air defence. This scale modelling project presents an F-102 in the colours of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF), built in 1/72 scale using the Meng Model kit.

The project combines aftermarket accessories with carefully executed scratch-built details to enhance the appearance of the finished model and reproduce important features of the aircraft more convincingly.

Meng Model F-102 Delta Dagger in 1/72 Scale

The foundation of this project is the Meng Model F-102 Delta Dagger 1/72 scale kit. During construction, several areas were improved with aftermarket accessories and additional details created from scratch.

The cockpit was enhanced using an Eduard detail set, while ResKit wheels were selected to improve the appearance of the landing gear. Additional scratch-building focused on the weapon bay, protective covers, landing gear system details and FOD covers.

These additions bring extra depth and visual interest to the model, particularly in areas that benefit from closer inspection.

Construction and Detailing

The construction process combined the kit’s original components with aftermarket parts and custom-made additions.

The main improvements included:

Cockpit detailing: enhanced using an Eduard aftermarket set.
Landing gear wheels: upgraded with ResKit accessories.
Weapon bay: additional details created from scratch.
Protective covers: custom-made covers added to the model.
Landing gear systems: extra details constructed to improve the final appearance.
FOD covers: added to represent protective covers used to prevent foreign object debris from entering vulnerable aircraft openings.

The combination of commercial accessories and scratch-building allowed the modeller to refine several areas beyond the standard kit configuration.

Painting, Weathering and Finishing

The model was painted using an airbrush and Gunze acrylic paints, allowing controlled paint application and an even finish.

For the weathering stage, washes from the Winsor & Newton range were used to accentuate surface details and add depth to recessed areas. The finishing process also incorporated varnishes from the same product range.

The final result brings together the painted surfaces, enhanced details and finishing work to present the Hellenic Air Force F-102 as a completed scale model.

Decals and Hellenic Air Force Markings

Icarus Decals were used to apply the markings associated with the Hellenic Air Force version represented by this project.

Decals play an important role in the final appearance of an aircraft model. Their placement, alignment and application can significantly influence the overall presentation, especially on aircraft with large, relatively uninterrupted surfaces such as the F-102 Delta Dagger.

Final Result

This 1/72 Hellenic Air Force F-102 Delta Dagger demonstrates how a well-selected aftermarket combination and carefully executed scratch-building can enhance a scale aircraft project.

The Meng Model kit provides the foundation, while the Eduard cockpit set, ResKit wheels, custom weapon bay details, protective covers and Icarus Decals contribute to the finished presentation.

The project is a useful reference for aircraft modellers interested in Cold War aviation, Greek military aircraft and the techniques involved in upgrading a model beyond its out-of-the-box configuration.

Thank you for visiting GModel Art. We wish you enjoyable building sessions and many successful modelling projects!

Vietnam War Aircraft Camouflage: SEA Colour Reference

The South East Asia (SEA) camouflage scheme became widely associated with United States Air Force aircraft operating during the Vietnam War. Its familiar combination of tan and green upper-surface colours, together with a light underside, provides an important reference for modellers reproducing aircraft finished in this scheme.

A related variation was used on certain Strategic Air Command (SAC) aircraft. The precise colours and their placement depended on the aircraft type and the applicable camouflage scheme.

Important modelling note: The colours listed below are a general SEA and SAC camouflage reference. They are not a paint guide for the Hellenic Air Force F-102 shown in this article. Always verify the specific aircraft’s documented finish before selecting paints.

SEA and SAC Camouflage Colour Reference

Colour	Federal Standard / ANA reference	Typical application
Sierra Tan	FS 30219	Upper-surface camouflage in the SEA scheme
Dark Green	FS 34079; ANA 631 reference	Upper-surface camouflage in the SEA scheme
Medium Green	FS 34102	Upper-surface camouflage in the SEA scheme
Green	FS 34159	Upper-surface colour used in certain SAC scheme variations
Tan Green	FS 34201	Upper-surface colour used in certain SAC scheme variations
Camouflage Gray	FS 36622	Undersides of aircraft finished in the SEA scheme
Flat Black	FS 37038; ANA 604 reference	Black underside or night-operation finishes, where applicable
Insignia White	FS 37875; ANA 601 reference	Underside finish in certain SAC scheme variations

The SEA scheme generally combined Sierra Tan (FS 30219), Dark Green (FS 34079) and Medium Green (FS 34102) on the upper surfaces, with Camouflage Gray (FS 36622) on the undersides.

Certain SAC aircraft employed variations using Green (FS 34159) and Tan Green (FS 34201), alongside Dark Green (FS 34079). Underside finishes could differ according to the aircraft and the particular scheme.

Flat Black (FS 37038) and Insignia White (FS 37875) should be treated as scheme-specific alternatives rather than universal underside colours.

Model Air Paint Sets for Vietnam War Aircraft

Dedicated Model Air paint sets are available for modelling United States Air Force aircraft deployed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. These sets can simplify paint selection by grouping colours associated with the SEA scheme and its variations.

Before painting, compare the instructions supplied with the kit against reliable photographs and references for the exact aircraft being modelled. Federal Standard and ANA designations are useful identification references, but they do not guarantee that every commercially available paint will reproduce an exact visual match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which kit was used for the Hellenic Air Force F-102 model?

The project was built using the Meng Model F-102 Delta Dagger kit in 1/72 scale.

Which aftermarket accessories were used?

The model includes an Eduard cockpit detail set and ResKit wheels, alongside scratch-built weapon bay details, protective covers and landing gear system details.

Which paints were used for the model?

Gunze acrylic paints were applied with an airbrush. Winsor & Newton products were used for washes and varnishes.

Which decals were used for the Greek F-102 markings?

Icarus Decals were used for the markings associated with the Hellenic Air Force version represented by the model.

What colours are used in the Vietnam War SEA camouflage scheme?

The standard SEA upper-surface combination includes Sierra Tan (FS 30219), Dark Green (FS 34079) and Medium Green (FS 34102), generally with Camouflage Gray (FS 36622) underneath. Specific aircraft and SAC variations may differ.

Are the Vietnam War SEA colours suitable for this Hellenic Air Force F-102?

Not automatically. The SEA colour reference is included for modellers researching Vietnam War-era aircraft. The appropriate colours for a Greek F-102 must be determined from references documenting the particular aircraft and finish being reproduced.
