F-16D Block 52+ Advanced HAF (1/48) – Converting the Tamiya F-16C into a Greek Two-Seater
Converting Tamiya’s outstanding 1/48 F-16C into a Hellenic Air Force F-16D Block 52+ Advanced was far more demanding than a typical out-of-the-box build. My goal was to achieve the highest possible level of accuracy without compromising the exceptional fit, surface detail, and engineering that make the Tamiya kit one of the best F-16 kits available.
Rather than building the Kinetic F-16D kit, I used it only as a donor for the parts that were absolutely necessary. Specifically, I retained the upper fuselage section behind the cockpit, which matches the twin-seat configuration, including the characteristic extended spine that runs from the rear cockpit to the base of the vertical stabilizer. The remainder of the model is built almost entirely from the Tamiya kit.
Although the Kinetic kit offers a straightforward route to a two-seat F-16, I preferred the Tamiya tooling because its molding quality, engineering, and engraved surface details are noticeably superior.
Aftermarket Accessories
To accurately reproduce a Hellenic Air Force F-16D Block 52+ Advanced, I used the following aftermarket accessories:
Aires 4291 – F-16D Fighting Falcon Cockpit (designed for Hasegawa kits)
Zeus Productions ZEU 48-001e – F-16C/D Greek Air Force Vipers – Part I decals
Surface Preparation and Painting
Once construction was complete, the entire model received a smooth metallic base coat. Selected panel lines and access panels were then subtly highlighted with black to create depth without producing an exaggerated weathering effect.
Painting a modern Hellenic Air Force F-16 requires particular attention because these aircraft are finished with the distinctive Have Glass low-observable coating. Reproducing this finish convincingly depends not only on selecting the correct Federal Standard (FS) colours, but also on applying them using an appropriate painting technique that preserves the characteristic metallic appearance of the real aircraft.
For this project, I selected the MRP (Mr. Paint) lacquer range, which provides excellent coverage, fine pigmentation, and a finish well suited to replicating the subtle sheen of the Have Glass coating.

Have Glass Note
Important: Hellenic Air Force F-16 Block 52+ Advanced aircraft are finished with the Have Glass low-observable coating. To reproduce the characteristic metallic sheen of the real aircraft, many modelers apply a light mist coat of MRP Have Glass Varnish, Have Glass Clear, or a very thin mix of metallic grey over the camouflage colors.
This combination of the Tamiya base kit, carefully selected aftermarket accessories, and the correct Have Glass painting process results in a highly accurate representation of the Hellenic Air Force F-16D Block 52+ Advanced, while preserving the outstanding quality and refined surface detail for which the Tamiya kit is renowned.
